Kazuki Saito is one of the pioneers in the field of plant metabolomics and uses an integrated approach that includes functional genomics and transcriptomics. For his distinguished research, he was awarded The Prize for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan, in 2010, and The Award for Distinguished Research from the Japanese Society for Plant Cell and Molecular Biology in 2011. He was also selected as one of American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) TOP AUTHORS in 2010.

Markus R WenkMarkus Wenk spearheads novel approaches in systems scale analysis of lipids and their interactors (lipidomics) and is recognized as one of leading investigators worldwide in this emerging field ( He established SLING, the Singapore lipidomics incubator, an interdisciplinary program dedicated to innovation, education and partnership in lipidomics research at the National University of Singapore (NUS, Markus has published more than 130 research articles, several book chapters and is an inventor on 6 patent applications.

Bas Teusink obtained his PhD in biochemistry (1999) and is currently Professor in Systems Bioinformatics at the Amsterdam Institute for Molecules, Medicines and Systems, VU University Amsterdam. His group is interested in the understanding and subsequent exploitation of regulation of biological networks, metabolic networks in particular. He combines quantitative experimentation with modeling of metabolism at the molecular, genome and cellular scale.

Jules Griffin holds a joint appointment between the UK Medical Research Council Human Nutrition Research and the University of Cambridge. He is also an Honorary Professor at Imperial College London (2012-2015) and was a visiting professor at the University of Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy (2011-2012). The programme of research focuses on the development of metabolomics and lipidomics tools to investigate aspects of the Metabolic Syndrome. In particular his team has an interest in identifying biomarkers that stratify patients according to risk factor of the Metabolic Syndrome and understand the associated underlying mechanisms.

David Wishart began work in metabolomics in 1999. From 2006-2009, he led the “Human Metabolome Project” (HMP), a multi-university, multi-investigator project that catalogued all of the known metabolites in human tissues and biofluids. The results from this project has been archived on a freely accessible web-resource called the Human Metabolome Database (HMDB). Dr. Wishart has continued to add to this work through periodic database updates and a number of publications describing the human serum, urine and cerebrospinal fluid metabolomes. Over the last 5 years his major focus has been on bringing metabolomics out from the lab and into clinical practice. Dr. Wishart currently directs the Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC), Canada’s national metabolomics platform.

Augustin Scalbert is Head of the Biomarkers Group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, Lyon, France; His current research focuses on the exposome and the identification of novel biomarkers of exposures through metabolomics to study the etiology of cancers in large cohorts. His research on plant polyphenols has received large attention from the scientific community. He has been identified as a Highly Cited Researcher in the field of Agriculture (ISI Thomson, 2005).

Mitsutoshi Setou, MD, received his PhD degree in Medicine in 2001 from the University of Tokyo and since 2008 he is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the Hamamatsu University School of Medicine. His field of research is molecular anatomy and cell biology with emphasis on characterization of longevity at molecular level and age related diseases. His research interests include development and applications of imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) in biology with “omics” technologies. He is co-author of over 140 peer reviewed papers (having more than 3400 cumulated citations), 14 book chapters, 4 granted patents and is the editor of a book on IMS.

Ute Roessner has obtained her PhD in Biochemistry at the MPI for Molecular Plant Physiology in Germany, where she developed novel GC-MS methods to analyse metabolites in plants. Together with the application of sophisticated data mining the field of metabolomics was born and is today an important tool in biological sciences, systems biology and biomarker discovery. In 2003 she moved to Australia where she established a GC-MS and LC-MS based metabolomics platform as part of the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics for which she now leads the node at the University of Melbourne. In addition, since 2007 A/Prof. Roessner has been involved in the setup of Metabolomics Australia (MA), a federal and state government funded national metabolomics service facility and now leads the MA node at the University of Melbourne.

Insuk Lee is an Associate Professor of Department of Biotechnology at Yonsei University. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002, and conducted postdoctoral research under EM Marcotte at Center for Systems and Synthetic Biology, University of Texas at Austin. Currently his research focuses on big biological data mining, integrative gene network modeling, and systems genetics. He is the developer of a series of gene-network analysis platforms such as AraNet, WormNet and HumanNet and spearheads the field of omics-data integration.

Pieter Dorrestein is the Director of the Therapeutic Discovery Mass Spectrometry Center and a Co-Director, Institute for Metabolomics Medicine in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Departments of Pharmacology, Chemistry and Biochemistry. Dr. Dorrestein was trained by Tadgh Begley in the chemical biology of enzymes involved in vitamin biosynthesis and by Neil Kelleher and Christopher Walsh, whom were co-sponsors of his NRSA postdoctoral fellowship, in Top and Middle down mass spectrometry on proteins that made small molecules of therapeutic value. Since his arrival to UCSD in 2006, Dr. Dorrestein has been pioneering the development of mass spectrometry methods to study the chemical and ecological crosstalk between population of organisms for agricultural, diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

Effective Metabolomics Software: From Design to Practice

Aim and Scope: Good design of scientific software is important. The care and awareness in using such softwareprograms were highlighted in 2006, when a group at Scripps had to retract five papers, including three from Science and one from PNAS due to a problem in their software program(Science 314, 1875;2006). As in other fields of life sciences, software is an intertwined part of Metabolomics. It plays a crucial role in all aspects of the workflow from data generation, management, processing, analysis, and to interpretation.

Aim and Scope: Metabolomics covers wide range of topics and is effective not only in biomedical fields but also in energy or environmental sciences. This workshop introduces the four research projects under the program title “Metabolomics for a Low Carbon Society,” jointly coordinated by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) since 2011. Each talk covers the recent progress including the measurement methods for metabolite identification, software development, and metabolic signalling among plants, insects, and disease. The latter part is dedicated to the worldwide networking efforts.

Session I. Scientific writing and Grant writing: how to get published and funded in metabolomics

This session will deal with something all scientists often face during their career: writing. Three excellent speakers will share their view on how to effectively communicate your science using written language. The different roles these scientists have, i.e., journal editor, part of funding body, part of reviewing committee, promises a vivid and diverse setting of this first session of the workshop. The speakers will concentrate on technical aspects of writing and give some tips focused on early-career scientists. This session aims to provide early-career scientist with tools and resources to work on their writing skills.

Session II. Identification of unknown metabolites

This session is focused on one of the biggest hurdles facing metabolomics research nowadays. The annotation and identification of unknown metabolites many of you will be confronted with during your metabolomics experiments, is a challenging part of the metabolomics pipeline. In this session, three speakers will explain their approaches and views on this topic and show useful metabolomics databases. The first two speakers will focus on data analysis of gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) spectra and liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution MS (LC-MS), and the role of NMR in de novo identification will be briefly touched upon. The last speaker will highlight the different metabolomics repositories that are available to the community nowadays. 

This session aims to create an awareness of the different approaches that are out there and the current metabolomics databases that you can use to annotate and identify your metabolites of interest.
